Renovation | Laminated Pine Wooden Windows in Toledo
Renovation of the Corral de Don Diego with wooden windows in Toledo, manufactured in laminated pine and combining energy efficiency with full respect for architectural heritage.
The intervention carried out in the Corral de Don Diego, in the heart of the historic centre of Toledo, is part of a municipal urban regeneration project aimed at recovering degraded heritage spaces and restoring them for residential and community use. The five newly built homes are surrounded by buildings with cultural protection and an urban fabric that requires a high level of architectural integration.
The project was designed and directed by architect Benjamín Juan Santágueda from the Arquitectos San Lorenzo 8 studio, who has taken part in numerous restorations of historic buildings in Toledo’s old town. Construction was carried out by the company Ardosan, also highly experienced in this type of work.
The renovation had to address two key requirements: providing more natural light and greater interior comfort for the homes, while maintaining strict respect for the aesthetic criteria of the historic centre. To achieve this, it was essential to choose exterior wooden joinery capable of offering high thermal and acoustic performance, while remaining consistent with traditional Toledan architecture.
For this project, wooden windows DJ68 Series were selected, made from high-stability laminated pine, an ideal material for restoration thanks to its ability to minimise movement and adapt to slender profiles in traditional openings. Laminated wood offers much greater dimensional rigidity than solid wood, allowing the manufacture of long pieces with minimal deformation and ensuring optimal performance against solar radiation and thermal variations.
One of the most distinctive elements of the project is the large L-shaped window installed in one of the homes, built using DJ68 joinery adapted to a complex meeting point between two façade planes. This opening greatly increases natural light and transforms the interior, a rare gesture in historic-centre renovations but made possible thanks to the stability of laminated pine and the technical design developed by Carinbisa. The result combines modern interior aesthetics with total exterior discretion, essential in a protected environment.
This project demonstrates that well-designed wooden joinery not only respects traditional aesthetics, but also significantly improves interior comfort and quality of life. Light, energy efficiency, and the warmth of natural wood blend seamlessly without altering the identity of the historic setting. The Corral de Don Diego now stands as an example of how to successfully combine heritage architecture with contemporary performance in such a sensitive environment as the historic centre of Toledo.
