Wooden Windows at the Barbastro Public Library

Wooden Windows at the Barbastro Public Library

The renovation of the emblematic San Pedro Warehouses of Barbastro , built in 1923, and their transformation into a municipal public library perfectly illustrate how historic architecture can adapt to contemporary uses without losing its identity. In this process, the choice of Carinbisa wooden windows has been key to preserving aesthetic coherence while ensuring comfort.

The building, deeply rooted in the collective memory of the city, has evolved from a former commercial space into a landmark cultural facility. This change of use requires construction solutions capable of meeting current standards of efficiency, insulation and durability, while at the same time respecting the heritage value of the complex.

Wooden windows as a structural element of the project

In renovation projects where the identity of the building is paramount, it is essential to rely on elements that ensure continuity with the architectural heritage. Due to the presence of large-format openings, the solution was implemented using Carinbisa laminated pine wooden windows, custom-designed for large openings with a segmental arch.

The use of laminated pine, finished with a pure white water-based varnish, allows the new joinery to be naturally integrated into the original architectural language, providing brightness, warmth and visual continuity.

This choice ensures a harmonious coexistence between the historic character of the building and a contemporary, functional interior image.

Acoustic insulation and interior comfort in a cultural building

One of the main challenges of the project was to guarantee the acoustic conditions required for its new use as a public library. The installed windows are part of an envelope system designed to achieve acoustic insulation of up to 44 dB, particularly relevant in spaces dedicated to reading and concentration.

The integration of vapour barrier membranes improves the airtightness and watertightness of the whole, optimising the acoustic and thermal performance of the building. The result is a quiet and stable interior, where comfort is a structural component of the project.

Wooden windows and energy efficiency

Beyond their aesthetic value, wooden windows play a key role in the energy efficiency of the building. Wood acts as a natural insulator, reducing energy losses and improving indoor comfort throughout the year.

In a large building with intensive public use such as this library, this efficiency translates into more sustainable operation and reduced energy consumption.

At Carinbisa, we are committed to high-performance timber joinery as an essential element in renovation projects and singular architecture. The Barbastro Public Library is a clear example of how wood, when well designed and expertly executed, helps create durable, efficient spaces with a strong identity.
